ANNOUNCEMENT MAKE PLANS NOW TO ATTEND THE 2006 REUNION IN GAINESVILLE Three to four hundred members and guests of the Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans are expected in Gainesville for the 109th annual reunion which takes place June 16, 17 and 18 in 2006. The reunion committee is headed by Stan McDaniel, Commander of Camp 1404, 27th Georgia Regiment, SCV in Gainesville. Five SCV camps are partnering with the Gainesville camp to execute the functions of the meeting. These are SCV canps in Cleveland, Dahlonega, Cumming, Habersham County and Lawrenceville. Active planning began more than a year in advance as several committee members served as observers at the recent reunion in Savannah and have established active relationships with leaders of previous reunions in Savannah, Dalton and Statesboro. The 2006 reunion dates are June 16, 17, 18. The Gainesville Civic Center is the hub of activities for registration, business meetings, elections, vendor exhibits and the Jefferson Davis Birthday Ball. Registration: Credentials Committee and vendor booths will open at noon on Friday, June 16th at the Civic Center. The opening ceremonies will take place at the Olympic Rowing Boathouse on Lake Lanier at 6 pm where a barbecue dinner will be followed by welcome messages from North Georgia dignitaries and Division officers. There will be a Dixie concert by a 30-voice choral group which will feature Confederate music and army songs. A special tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of the 1956 Georgia state flag (our division flag) will be presented by young people. The feature of the evening will be a battle on Lake Lanier between two ironclads from the National Civil War Museum, the USS Monitor with two cannons and the CSS Richmond with four cannons. A crew of six in respective uniforms from the museum will man the ironclads. The Friday event will close with a 21 gun heavy artillery salute to the two Confederate heroes the reunion has chosen to honor, General James Longstreet and Sidney Lanier. The public will be invited to the Friday production at $10 for adults, kids with a parent, free. The program on Saturday will include business meetings starting at 9 am. Elections for Division offices for the coming two years will take place. Since it is also an election year in the international SCV organization many candidates and guests are expected for the reunion in Gainesville. The Keynote Lunch and Awards Program will take place at noon on Saturday at the Civic Center. At the same time there will be a tour and lunch for the ladies and kids at the various Longstreet historic sites, with chartered busses and guides. On Saturday evening, June 18th beginning at 7pm the President Davis Birthday Ball will begin with a buffet supper. This program will also feature the introduction of the Georgia debutantes for 2006. Dancing to the reels of the period will continue until midnight with music provided by the The Unreconstructed Band. Instructors will be available to assist all with the various period dances. Dress is either period or party dress. The public is invited to the buffet and ball. Adults $20, kids with parents, $8. Many will be interested in seeing and having our young people see what a Southern ball with hoopskirts and uniforms as well as party dress is like. On Sunday morning, June 18th there will be a memorial service followed by a meeting of the newly elected Division Executive Committee. Commander McDaniel stated "Our intentions are to have a program our compatriots will want to plan ahead to bring their families for a great weekend of exciting events and North Georgia hospitality as well as good meetings and elections." Registration is $25 until June 6th when it increases to $40. Beat the deadline and save. Spouses and children are free. Tickets for the individual events total less than some recent reunions. Opening Dixie Extravaganza and barbecue, $20 adults, kids, $8. Keynote and Awards Lunch $15, limited to the first 160 reservations, Longstreet tour and lunch for ladies and children, $15, (reservations required) President Davis Birthday Ball and Supper, $20 adults, $8 for children with parents. Tables of 8 can be reserved for camps or groups or families at the above prices as long as kids don't exceed four per table. It is suggested camps invite their home area officials as their guests. We anticipate broad media coverage throughout the schedule of events. All events for SCV members are $80. For spouses, $55 and for children $31. The headquarters hotel is The Lanier Center Best Western, a full service hotel. We are holding 100 rooms, first come first served. The rates are $82 plus tax for up to four people.
