Georgia Division Statement Regarding the Recent Events at

Elm Springs, Tennessee

February 22, 2005

    The Georgia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans (the largest single Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans), through its Executive Council representing its members, forcefully, and in the strongest language, condemns and deplores the abhorrent and unjustified actions taken by certain members of the General Executive Council (GEC) of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, to wit:

1) holding a patently illegal meeting, without a proper quorum, in opposition to the Constitution of our organization Wednesday, February 16, 2005. Said meeting was not called by the Commander-in-chief as specified by the Constitution;

2)violating various rules of parliamentary procedure and established rules governing our SCV, including immediately convening in Executive Session, maintaining total secretiveness, inviting at least one non-GEC member to take part in closed session deliberations, permitting suspended members Bob Hawkins and Peter Orlebeke to participate and decide (apparently) on their own cases, etc;

3)illegally suspending from the GEC our duly elected Commander-in-Chief Denne Sweeney at this meeting, without CIC Sweeney being heard or able to defend himself;

4)firing our Adjutant-in-Chief, Chaplain-in-Chief, and Editor-in-Chief, without their participation in this decision in any way, or in the case of our Adjutant-in-Chief, refusing to let him speak or be heard at all;

5)then proceeding to a local Chancery Court in Tennessee to attack and sue Commander in Chief Sweeney as the "SCV," securing an order giving them temporary "power" over our organization, in opposition to the expressed will of the members who voted specifically for CIC Sweeney in Dalton, Georgia, last year, and in opposition to the due process provided for in our SCV Constitution.

6) And in performing these actions thus committing acts that are both repugnant and offensive to our SCV Constitution and to our members across the Confederation.

THE GEORGIA DIVISION, SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS, through it’s Executive Council representing its members, further pledges its loyalty to its duly elected Commander-in-Chief Denne Sweeney, his officers, and to those members of the GEC who faithfully observe and respect our Constitution.

THE GEORGIA DIVISION cannot acknowledge illegal and anti-constitutional actions, and will collaborate with its sister divisions in the Confederation to overturn these injustices, not excluding possible legal action.

THE GEORGIA DIVISION calls upon the individuals who have, behind closed doors, taken the outrageous actions listed above to do one honorable thing, and that is to resign from the organization they have done so much to hurt and besmirch, causing us to loose credibility in the eyes of many but to the pleasure of our enemies.

THE GEORGIA DIVISION having been in the process of attempting to win, through legislation, the right for the citizens of Georgia to vote on the State banner which includes the Confederate Battle Flag feel that these actions taken place during the week of February 13-19, 2005 may have done almost irreparable damage to the reputation of the International Sons of Confederate Veterans and in turn the Georgia Division of said organization do here by call for a stop to this power hungry posturing and call for the reinstatement of our duly elected Commander in Chief Denne Sweeney and return of control of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to the members thereof.
